Why Don't We Write Our Own Songs

Every six months (give or take) this question is brought up to me, “Why don’t we write our own songs?”. Sometimes it’s more of a statement of fact, rather than a question. “You know, you should write your own songs. How great would that be?” Most of the time I just smile and nod, and try to change the subject to something else. However as I was thinking about this question recently, I figured it might be good to have some document to refer back to about why we aren’t doing this.

I Wrote a Book

I am pleased to announce the release of my first book, “Working Our Way through Life.” This book is based on the teachings that I did at church back at the beginning of 2019. It is a short devotional (only 50 pages; what an easy read!) covering twenty passages of Scripture related to the topic of work. It is designed to be read for one or two minutes a day over the course of 20 days, but can easily be read in one sitting as well.

This is a great question. If you have attended Good News Church for a while (say, six months or more) you will have noticed that we teach through books of the Bible, but not exclusively. For instance, in the past three years we’ve taught through the Gospel of Mark, 1 & 2 Timothy, and the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes. However, during those same three years, we also did series on the topics of marriage, church, work, and handling conflict.

Occasionally, people will ask me why I preach out of the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB); perhaps it’s because it’s not as well-known of a translation as the NIV or KJV. Well, here is my main answer: I like that it is a balance between the dynamic equivalence and formal equivalence methods of translating the Bible.
