Why Volunteer?

September 14, 2011 Gary Haverdink

My wife, Arlene, and I have had the opportunity to serve several churches, in many capacities before retiring. When I retired from my work, I also retired from serving in any local church.

Approximately one year ago I was told by my doctor at an annual physical that I was in very good health and had a long life expectancy. If God was possibly going to bless me with many more good years, what should I be doing with them? It was then that I did a self examination, and realized that I had become very self-centered with the use of my time and resources in retirement.

I then approached Pastor Mario and told him I was volunteering to help his ministry, and was seeking God’s direction for my life. He said the church was looking to hire a part-time person to coordinate volunteers and help organize a small group ministry. He challenged me to consider taking the staff position as a volunteer. I told him that I thought I was too old to work with and relate to a young congregation. He convinced me to give it a try. Well, I want to tell you that decision completely changed my life. I have been blessed more than you can imagine.

We never expected then that God had plans for us in Ocala. Because of our love for Mario and Heidi, Arlene and I decided that we would support them in any way we could in their ministry in Ocala.

I know most of you are not able to be a full-time volunteer because of financial and family requirements. However, I firmly believe that God has brought all of us together at this time and place to present the Gospel to those who do not know God yet.

Good News Church needs all of us to do our part, if we are going to spread the good news that Jesus Christ is the answer for today and eternity.
